Paul Simon’s Graceland Fretless Basslines Lesson by Bakithi Kumalo

The bass playing on Paul Simon’s Graceland is what first attracted me
to the low end (even before I knew what a bass guitar was). Bakithi
Kumalo remains a tour de force on the instrument and is still one of
my favourite bass players with his deep tone and wide groove. An
inspiration.

Its a shame that local councils and traders don’t understand the value
that culture (in particular busking) can bring to a faceless
city/shopping experience.

Been listening to this album from the excellent Ambient / Post-Rock guitarist Lowercase Noises (aka Andrew Othling) quiet a bit recently. I love it!

30 day project, what next?

In a previous blog I wrote about my 30 day projects for this year and what I have been up to. As my 30 days of blogging draws to a close it will be interesting to see if I still continue next month. As 30 days is about the length of time it takes to form or change a habit I hope so.

So what next? Well I think I may start a Blipfoto account and try an take at least one photo and post it there every day. I find photography fascinating, but have not spent much time working on taking better pictures. I’ve taken some good ones and some rubbish ones. But I would like to understand more of the theory behind a well composed and technically good image. Hopefully a 30 day photography project will facilitate this.

As well as the whole photography thing I’m also considering writing a new piece of music every day. Not a complete track, more of a sketch book of pretty little ditties that I would post over on my Posterous site. As I have said previously I wrote and recorded an album of material in February this year for the RPM Challenge and this was a breath of fresh air to my musicality after several years mainly being involved in other peoples projects. So I would like to make more of my own music, not for any other reason than to do it and because its fun. So these won’t be complete tracks, polished or honed to perfection. These will be doodles or sketches warts and all.

Free City wide Wifi – Update

Well last week I posted this blog, basically it was the email I sent to Nottingham City Council regarding installing free city wide wifi. The blog has been re-tweeted and read a few times, I’ve had some good comments and conversations with peers regarding it as a concept. No contact from Nottingham City Council though.

I appreciate they are busy people, but it would be good to hear there view on it. I expect they are al tide up with the worrying Comprehensive Spending Review by the Government and how its going to impact the services they already offer, let alone thinking of taking on new ones.

I still think its a good idea and would help the local economy and education. It would be a positive move for Nottingham to become one of the first digital cities in the UK. Swindon is already on the case with their wireless internet for all (although it does sound like something fishy has gone on there).

Nottingham City Council we need this.
